Bablu walked out of a function at the Diploma Engineers Institute, where Quader, brother of Jaitya Party Chairman HM Ershad, made the critical remark on Wednesday.

Ershad was present at the function organised by the Jatiya Motsyajibi Party, a Jatiya Party affiliate. Quader and Bablu sat on either side of the party chief on the dais.

This was the first time Quader attended an open party programme.
Speaking at the function, he said: “Jatiya Party is a gazetted opposition party. If (Jatiya Party) is an opposition party, it has to be the real opposition party. It’s not possible for a party to play the role of a real opposition party while being in the government.”
Bablu reacted instantly. “Is it a statement?” he asked, and walked off from the dais even as Jatiya Party Presidium member SM Foysal Chisti tried to stop him.

After Bablu left, Quader said: “Truth appears to be harsh sometimes. That’s why I don’t want to speak...”
Ershad said: “We’ve accepted what happened over the election issue. We’re performing the role of the opposition. The people don’t want to see two parties (the Awami League and BNP in power).
“The people want the Jatiya Party. We’ll form government in future,” he added.
