“Large sums of money came in as compensation for the victims and survivors of Rana Plaza tragedy. That money has been squandered,” acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Thursday.
A BNP-affiliated organisation held a prayer for the victims of Rana Plaza at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters on the first anniversary of the accident.
“Many workers have not received enough compensation. Many disabled victims are living in terrible conditions,” Fakhrul said, speaking at the event.
“The government wanted to use the tragedy in their own political ploys. Their plans have failed,” he claimed.
Fakhrul said garment workers in the country were suffering.
“Workers are losing jobs every day. This country needs a people’s government to ensure that a tragedy like Rana Plaza never happens again.”
Some other senior BNP leaders also spoke at the event.
Afterwards, a special prayer was held for the departed souls of the Rana Plaza victims.
