He was speaking at the divisional conference of Bangladesh Human Rights Commission at Sylhet district council auditorium on Saturday.
Suranjit said settlement of cases was being delayed as there were tens of thousands of pending cases with the courts across the country.
“As a result, we don’t get justice if we file a case,” he said.
The veteran politician is the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Criticising the backlog, he said, “If someone lodges a case, even his grandson doesn’t see its disposal.”
“If the trial process is delayed, the democracy is hampered. Besides, it makes the constitutional rights redundant.”
The ruling party’s Advisory Council Member, Suranjit said that the number of incidents of disappearance and murder was on rise in the country.
He also expressed his dissatisfaction over the slow disposal of the disappearance-related cases.
