2 BNP-backed candidates fined

Two candidates were fined in Savar Upazila for violating the electoral code of conduct on Thursday ahead of the polls on Feb 27.

A mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Liakat Ali, slapped a fine of Tk 50,000 on BNP-backed chairman candidate Hazi Kafil Uddin (cup-saucer symbol) and Tk 4,000 on vice-chairman candidate Mini Akther Urmi (swan symbol).

The election to the Upazila Parishad is slated for Feb 27 in the second phase.

Magistrate Ali told bdnews24.com that Kafil Uddin was fined for violating the election code of conduct by bringing out a motor cycle rally in Ganakbari area of Ashulia industrial area around 11am.

He also was penalised for covering his vehicles with posters.

Kafil Uddin is currently the Chairman of Aminbazar Union Council.

Previously he was the General Secretary of Savar thana unit of BNP.

The magistrate also fined vice-chairman aspirant Mini Akther Urmi on similar charges.

Urmi, a member of the Ward No. 2 of Yarpur Union Council, is the President of Ashulia thana unit of the BNP.
