Hasina vacates Rangpur-6

Awami League president Sheikh Hasina has vacated Rangpur-6 just a day before she takes oath as MP from Gopalganj-3 on Wednesday.

She conveyed her choice of seat in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Wednesday evening.

The letter was reached to the CEC by the Prime Minister’s Personal Secretary-2 Selima Khatun and party Assistant Secretary ABM Reazul Kabir Kawser.

Hasina is the only candidate who won from two constituencies in the 10th general election held on Sunday.

Kawser said, “Owing to constitutional obligations, she has vacated one seat and kept another. She will take oath on Thursday at 10am.”

In the letter Hasina, said, “I have won two seats in the elections. I have decided to vacate Rangpur-6.”

“As per rules, arrangements should be taken to preserve Gopalganj-3 as my electoral area.”

Hasina had won Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) – her in-law’s area - with 1,48,599 votes in the general elections.

Her closest contender was Jatiya Party candidate Noor Alam Jadu, who got 4,959 votes.

Hasina had won from her native Gopalganj-3 (Kotaliparha-Tungiparha) polling 1,87,185 votes while her closer rival Jatiya Party candidate AZ Apu Sheikh got 2,430 votes.

No votes were cancelled at 139 voting centres in Rangpur-6, but results of two centres have been withheld.

A total of around 0.25 million votes have been cancelled during the polling in 147 seats in Bangladesh.
