Ershad richer than Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has no outstanding liabilities, but Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad has much.

He owes banks Tk 27.5 million, though he earns more than Tk 9 million from his investments in market-linked instruments.

While filing nominations for contesting the upcoming parliament polls, Hasina has furnished details of her assets -- as all others contesting the polls have done.

She claims Tk 498,000 in cash and bank deposits around Tk 10 million with Tk 50 million in savings certificates and gold ornaments worth Tk 1.3 million.

Hasina also claims to be sole owner of 6 acres of agricultural land and holds another 6 acres jointly with others. She earns an annual Tk 75,000 from agriculture.

She earns Tk 138,000 from rent, nearly half a million taka from fisheries and Tk 1 million from sale of trees , but her main income -- nearly TK 4.6 million annually -- comes from fixed deposits, savings certificates and stocks. Hasina has no liabilities or debts to pay off.

The Awami league chief is contesting three seats from Gopalganj, Rangpur and Narail.
Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad has also filed nominations for three constituencies in Rangpur, Lalmonirhat and Dhaka.
The former military dictator has claimed in details furnished while filing nominations that he has cash worth Tk 10.26 million, stocks, bonds and other market-related instruments worth Tk 400 million and holds Tk 70 million in savings certificates.
His investment in transport business is more than Tk 12 million and his real estate assets are worth Tk 15 million.
But Ershad owes the First Security Bank Tk 27.5 million.
His annual earnings touch Tk 9.1 million from his market-linked investments.
He makes Tk 1.4 million from employment and only Tk 62,000 from other businesses.
Declaration of assets has been made mandatory for all those contesting the polls.
