Police nod for AL, BNP rallies

Police have permitted both Opposition BNP and ruling Awami League to hold their rallies on Friday at two separate places, instead of the both parties’ planned venue Laldighi, in Chittagong city.

Deputy Police Commissioner (Sadar) Masud-ul-Hasan told bdnews24.com: “We have notified both the parties about this by phone and will have notified them in writing by tonight (Thursday).”

City Awami League Joint General Secretary Ibrahim Hossain Babul told bdnews24.com: “We have been allowed to hold our rally on Shaheed Minar premises at 3pm.”

“Both the parties have been allowed to hold the rallies on the condition of not occupying Laldighi ground on Friday,” he said.

City BNP General Secretary Shahdat Hossain told bdnews24.com: “We have been allowed to hold our rally at Kazir Deuri at 3pm on Friday.”

He also said neither party had been permitted to hold their rally at Laldighi.

BNP Central Vice Chairman Abdullah-al-Noman said the party’s city unit leaders and activists had been urged to make the Friday rally at Kazir Deuri a success.
BNP and Awami League had called simultaneous rallies at Laldighi ground on Friday.
Amid fears that both the parties might clash over the holding of their rallies at the same venue, police have banned all types of rallies, meetings and processions in the city
