The decision was taken in a meeting of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other senior leaders at her Gulshan office on Thursday night.

“We have decided to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan from 2pm for the sake of peace and compromise (as per police conditions). We hope the government will provide full safety to people going to the rally,” Fakhrul said.

He warned that the government would be responsible if the ruling party men and the law enforcement agencies created disturbances or prevented anyone from joining the gathering.

Opposition chief Khaleda Zia will address the rally as its Chief Guest.

The 18-Party Alliance is holding Friday’s public meeting to press for a non-partisan regime to oversee the next parliamentary election.

The government, however, wants it conducted under its own supervision.
Earlier in the day, the Opposition had insisted on holding the rally at Naya Paltan, when police had specified Suhrawardy Udyan as the permitted venue.
Among the BNP leaders, Joint Secretary Barkatullah Bulu was present at the press briefing.
