4 more cases over Narayanganj violence

Four more lawsuits were filed over the Narayanganj mayhem that had left at least 19 people, including four law enforcers, dead.

BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists were sued along with Hifazat-e Islam supporters in the cases filed by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police.

The cases were filed at Siddhirganj Police Station in late Tuesday night, Narayanganj Assistant Police Superintendent (ka zone) Mohammad Ahsan said. In these cases accusation were made against 14,000 people, of them only 132 have been named. Rest are all unidentified persons.

Siddhirganj Police Station Sub Inspector Alamgir Hossain filed one case against 3,000 people, including 18 named, over the death of two policemen during clashes with Hifazat supporters.

Sub Inspector Ataur Rahman filed the second case against anonymous people for killing of three persons.

Sub Inspector Farid Ahmmed filed the third case against 3,000 people including 70 identified, in connection with arson at a police box in Siddhirganj’s Sign Board area.

The fourth case was filed by RAB-11 Deputy Assistant Director Srikanta Tripura against 8,000 people including 34 named, over attack on RAB, obstruction to government duty and arson.

This raises the total tally of cases filed over the Narayanganj mayhem up to nine. Earlier five cases were filed at Sonargaon Police Station on Monday.

Hifazat supporters were driven out from Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar in Dhaka in a late Sunday night drive. They later took position on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

When police and paramilitary Border Guard Battalion (BGB) tried to move them from Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj area, clashes broke out. Nineteen people, including two BGB and two policemen died in the clashes. Over a hundred were injured.

At least 10 vehicles including cars of RAB and BGB were set on fire.
