Dhaka, Dec 12 (bdnews24.com) – The opposition BNP has expelled its Comilla district unit joint-general secretary Monirul Haque Sakku, a mayor aspirant in the upcoming elections to the newly-formed Comilla City Corporation.
The elections are scheduled for Jan 5.
Steps were taken against Sakku, a former mayor of Comilla municipality, for fighting the elections in violation of the party's decision, says a BNP statement issued on Monday.
The executive BNP member has been relieved of all party posts and his primary membership scrapped for defying party discipline, according to the release, signed by BNP joint-secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed.
Sakku had earlier appealed to the BNP high command, seeking exit from the party.
The BNP has already announced its decision to boycott the Comilla city polls to protest Election Commission's resolution to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) at all polling centres in the city corporation elections, and not to deploy army.
Sakku, a close relative of former minister and late BNP leader Col Akbar (retd), is meanwhile in no mood to opt out of the race.
