Dhaka, Jan 18 (BDNEWS) – BNP leaders Wednesday said Ziaur Rahman gave direction to the nation through declaration of independence of Bangladesh following the failure of the political leaders in 1971.
They were speaking at a discussion meeting organised by BNP at the 'Mahanagar Natyamancha' Wednesday to mark the 70th birth anniversary of former president Ziaur Rahman.
The meeting, presided over by the BNP general secretary and LGRD and Cooperatives minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, was addressed by, among others, KM Obaidur Rahman, Dr RA Gani, former Vice Chancellor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, joint secretary general of BNP and Public Works minister Mirza Abbas, state minister for cultural affairs Begum Selima Rahman, Goyeswar Chandra Roy, Inam Ahmed Chowdhury, Jafrul Hasan, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Fazlul Haq Milan, Babul Ahmed and Azizul Bari Helal.
Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said that Zia laid the foundation of modern Bangladesh.
Ziaur Rahman re-established democracy and freedom of press in the country as he wanted to build a self-dependant Bangladesh.
He alleged that some quarters are trying to assassinate his character as Ziaur Rahman managed to achieve success in the fields where they utterly failed. He urged the people to work unitedly to implement the unfinished tasks of Zia.
