Bangladesh-bound truck loaded with 58,000 bottles of cough syrup seized in Tripura

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) detained a Bangladesh-bound truck loaded with cough syrup bottles in Tripura, officials said here Thursday.

The haul contained 43,400 bottles of phensedyl and 14,880 bottles of eskuf syrup which worth around Rs 72 lakhs. The price could be three or four times higher after it reached Bangladesh.

Acting on a tip off by BSF Field G (Intelligence) Gokulnagar branch, 195 battalion of the BSF along with DRA seized the truck loaded with contraband cough syrup used by the addicts.

The truck bearing a Nagaland registration number NL-01-L-4649 halted by the law enforcers at the Amtali-Khayerpur bypass under Srinagar police station outskirts of capital Agartala last night.

BSF DIG Hardeep Singh said, “During the joint search some 58,000 cough syrup bottles worth around Rs 72 lakh was discovered and which were meant for being smuggled out to Bangladesh.”

“The truck has been seized along with two persons. Phensedyl is a banned drug and youths use it. To prevent youths from using it we are always on alert and try to prevent its smuggling,” he said.

The ceased consignment has been stored in Nischintapur border outpost and shall be produced before the court tomorrow by the concern department.

BSF along with the state administration during the recent time have seized huge quantity of dry marijuana and destroyed plantations from the bordering areas.

Four northeastern states - Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam - share a 1,880-km border with Bangladesh, some of it unfenced and running through dense forests, making it porous and vulnerable.
