The Eid prayers started around 8.30am conducted by Imam of the mosque Maulana Abdul Rehaman.

Muslims hugged and exchanged greetings of peace and love even with those belonging to other religions.

It is the festival of sacrifice celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son to keep his word to God.

“Islam gives the message of sacrifice and this celebration of Eid is basically for sacrifice of the loved ones. It spreads the message of love,” said Akhil Ahamed, who came along with his son to participate in the Namaz.

Md Sheikh Aktar, a resident of far Jammu and Kashmir state, was happy to celebrate Eid in far off Tripura, which he described as a 'very peaceful place'.

His native Kashmir is torn asunder by violent antigovernment protests that have forced authorities to allow prayers only in mosques.

“I will appeal to my brothers back home to maintain peace," said Aktar.

Baharul Islam Majumder, a participant in Tuesday's prayer, said, “If you go by the Islamic philosophy it is a religion of sacrifice. Today is the day of Kurbani, so we are commemorating the sacrifice given by our Prophet and also following that practice."

Muslims across the world celebrate this historical event with great enthusiasm and respect.

Each Muslim family which is capable of sacrificing any animal does so and distributes the meat to the poor and also give donations to various institutions, specially those run orphanages and elderly homes.
