Addressing a rally of party workers in the state’s Dibrugarh town on Friday, BJP President Amit Shah called for removing the Congress from power in the 2016 assembly election.

He alleged it was because of the Congress' vote bank politics that infiltration has continued from across the border, threatening national security.

“BJP is the only party that does not compromise national security for vote bank politics,” he claimed.

He claimed it was not possible to get rid of illegal immigrants until the Congress was in power in Assam.

Shah was for the first time addressing the rally to boost the confidence of party workers in Assam after BJP’s electoral defeat in Bihar.

Issue of illegal immigrants is one of the BJP's major poll planks in Assam.

Besides, it is also trying to raise the issue of possibilty that All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF)-Congress alliance will polarise Hindu voters especially in upper Assam.

Claiming that the AIUDF and the Congress struck a “secret understanding”, Shah dared Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to talk openly with AIUDF chief Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal.

"I want to ask you:  Can the Congress and the AIUDF deliver a Bangladeshi-free Assam?" he posed before the audience.

Shah further claimed that the land swap deal between India and Bangladesh would help resolve the issue of illegal infiltration.

Apart from raising emotive issues, the BJP president also tried to project his party-led government at the Centre as pro-development.

He said the BJP-led NDA government was working actively towards regional development.

He also referred to the ongoing Naga peace talks and the recent extradition of United Liberation Front of Asom general secretary Anup Chetia from Bangladesh.

"We know the necessity for a secured border for Assam. As a frontal state, Assam needs, above all, a patriotic and committed government that understands the importance of national security. Only a BJP government can ensure all these," he said.

The BJP president also claimed the Congress could not give a corruption-free administration to the people.

He urged BJP workers in Assam to go from door to door highlighting the alleged corruption of the Congress government in the state.
