India and Germany on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi on security cooperation.

Both the sides also signed a joint declaration of intent to cooperate in the field of disaster management.

Government officials believe German expertise and technology would help to India fight illegal migration and the smuggling of counterfeit currency from neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh.

The MoU will enable the exchange of information, technical expertise and cooperation in basic and advanced security training.

India’s State Minister for Home Kiren Rijiju said, “The MoU on Security Cooperation has created strategic initiative between India and Germany.”

“The MoU proposes to intensify cooperation in countering terrorism in all its forms, including recruitment, financing, propaganda, training, and terrorist movements,” he added.

The deal would also help counter organised crime, prevent and combat unlawful production/extraction of narcotic and psychotropic substances, the minister said.

Rijiju and German Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Interior Gunter Krings signed the MoU.

Rijiju expressed the hope that Germany would overcome its reluctance to sign the bilateral Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) which would pave the way for the deportation of criminals.
