Some 400,000 saplings were planted during a span of 30 minutes between 10am to 10:30am on Wednesday.

Personnel from all ranks of the Indian border force took part in the unique plantation drive in an effort to create a new LIMCA Book of Record by breaking its own previous record.

Earlier in 2014, some 10,391 BSF personnel set the world record by planting 3, 09,141 saplings in 30 minutes.

In Tripura with the theme, ‘Save the Tree, Save the Earth – We are the Guardians of Nature’s Birth’, some 25,000 saplings were planted by BSF across the state’s 857 km border with Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Launched as a part of its Golden Jubilee Year celebrations, the initiative was also to educate the troopers about the climate change and global warming.

Saplings of valuable trees were planted by BSF officials and troopers along with forest officials.

“Today within half an hour, the BSF planted four lakh saplings all over the country and on our Tripura frontier, we planted 25,000 saplings,” said BN Sharma, IG BSF Tripura Frontier.

“BSF has chosen this drive keeping in mind the need to protect the environment and our green cover. We always give emphasis to the social needs of the country.”
The plantation drive is expected to sensitise and encourage the masses to take concrete action towards extenuating the effects of climate change.
Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest Balbir Singh, who was one of the guests at the programme, said, due to various human activities, the forest cover of Tripura had gone down.
BSF’s aforestation drive would show positive results in future, he added.
Similar plantation drives were also carried out at Gakulnagar and Panisagar sectors.
