Indian Home Secretary LC Goel told the media that at least 34 people were killed across the country.
Twenty-three died in Bihar, three in West Bengal while eight people died in Uttar Pradesh as tremors were felt across India.
The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Principal Secretary to the PM Nripendra Misra, Additional Principal Secretary to the PM PK Mishra, and senior officials of the government, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Government sources told bdnews24.com that at least two Indians have died in Nepal. Around 250 Indians were evacuated on Saturday night.
Officials said exact number of Indian casualties could not be known immediately.
Prime Minister Modi had earlier spoken to the president and prime minister of Nepal, and the chief ministers of the States of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh.
Modi has assured Nepal of all assistance in dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake.
“The prime minister directed immediate dispatch of relief and rescue teams, including medical teams to Nepal, as well as to affected areas in India,” a NDRF official said.
“He also directed that proper arrangements be made for rendering assistance in evacuation of stranded tourists.”
An earthquake with an intensity of 7.9 on Richter scale with epicentre 77 kilometre north-west of Kathmandu hit the region.
In order to deal with the situation in the affected states, five teams of NDRF have already been sent there.
