Agartala protest Avijit Roy murder

Hundreds of protestors took to the streets of Agartala on Sunday to raise their voice against the murder of US-based Bangladeshi writer-blogger Avijit Roy in Dhaka.

Hundreds of youths, writers, poets, artists and scientists took part in the protest rally organised jointly by Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Students Federation of India (SFI) and Tripura Science Forum.

“We are showing our solidarity towards him and raising our voice against fundamentalism. Be it Islamic or Hindu, be it Bangladesh or India, fundamentalist are trying to grow throughout the globe and is an evil that tries to hinder free express and thoughts,” expressed Nataraj Datta, one of the protesters.

The protesters gathered in front of Agartala city centre and walked through the streets of the capital city as they raised anti-fundamentalist slogans.

A strong voice against communalism, Avijit Roy had been threatened several times for writing against communalism and religious radicalism.

Avijit and his wife, fellow blogger Rafida Ahmed Bonya, were brutally attacked near the TSC intersection on Thursday.

Later he died at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital while his seriously injured wife is undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital.

Thursday’s attack bore a striking similarity to the one on legendary writer Humayun Azad in February 2004.

Azad was also returning home from the Ekushey Book Fair, when he was hacked with machetes by radical militants.
