Hossain said a group of activists of pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League, equipped with machetes, iron rods and batons, attacked him in front of the institution’s main gate on Monday afternoon.

Hossain, a former chemistry department student of the university and ex-president of Jagannath University Journalists Association, went to his alma mater to withdraw his certificate.

He has been admitted to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital with injuries on his forehead, head, back and legs.

Hossain filed a case with Kotwali police accusing the university’s law department student Imran Biswas and several others for ‘attempting to murder him’.
He said that his fellow journalists caught Biswas after the attack but Chhatra League leaders freed him.
Kotwali police said they would take legal action ‘immediately’.
