She said that it would allow the country's booming broadcasting industry to operate under 'specific' rules and guidelines.

Speaking at an event at the National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMCO) on Wednesday, Hasina said that a Broadcast Commission would be formed in light of the newly formed policy.

"I know this has created quite a fuss. Many are opposing it. It was the journalists who sought for a policy. Now a faction (of journalists) is opposing it.

"A guideline is needed for everything. Everyone has to be accountable to the society," she told the audience gathered for the inauguration of the Bangladesh Film and Television Institute.

The prime minister urged all to come forward to develop the Bangladeshi film industry so that it could compete with the global movie industry.
