The appointments would be made in phases, Nasim added.

He also said the decision aims to ensure proper health care of people at the grassroots level.

According to the minister, around 7,000 doctors were appointed through BCS exams in last three years.

Among them, 6,000 were appointed at Upazila level through the 33rd BCS tests.

Doctors in Bangladesh get their MBBS and BDS degrees from around 133 government and private medical and dental colleges. They have to take BCS tests to enter government service.

According to Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, the number of registered doctors in the country is around 75,000, including 22,000 doing government job.
