The National Aids Control Organisation (Naco) revealed the shocking information following a petition, the BBC reports.

The real figure maybe double or triple than what was admitted by state-run Naco, said Chetan Khotari, the information activist who filed the petition.

India has around 2.09 million people living with HIV/Aids, the report said.

The law makes it mandatory for hospitals to check donors and the blood received for HIV, hepatitis B and C, malaria and other infections, he said.

But each test costs 1,200 rupees and even the largest government hospitals do not have HIV-testing facilities, Khotari told the BBC.

In Mumbai, only three private hospitals had HIV testing facilities.

The largest number of cases, a total 361, who were given the deadly virus through contaminated blood, was from the state Uttar Pradesh, as revealed by Khotari’s Right to Information (RTI) query. Gujarat follows with 292 and Maharashtra with 276 cases.

India’s capital Delhi had 264 cases.
