Dhaka to get super-speciality hospital

The government has taken an initiative to build a super-speciality hospital for the treatment of complex illnesses.

The plan for the project, named ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Medical University (BSMMU) Super-Specialised Hospital’, will be placed before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday.

A separate 12-storey building will be constructed on the BSMMU’s own land, with Tk 13.66 billion earmarked for the proposed hospital.

The project will be implemented by the university authorities, notes the project summary prepared for the ECNEC. 

South Korea will provide Tk 10.47 billion as loan for the project, which will be implemented between Jan 2016 and Dec 2019.  The loan, with only 0.01% interest, will have to be paid back in 40 years with a grace period of 15 years.

The Bangladesh government will provide another Tk 1.45 billion for the project, while the university will come up with Tk 1.47 billion from its own funds.

The hospital aims to ‘provide modern treatment at affordable cost’, according to the project proposal.    

It will have an emergency medical care centre, gastroenterology and hepatobiliary centre, child and mother healthcare centre, cardio and cerebrovascular centre, kidney centre, intensive care unit and central diagnostic centre, besides a pathology department.   

“The new 300-bed hospital will be built on the university’s extended plot. This will raise the hospital’s capacity to 1,000 beds,” said BSMMU vice-chancellor professor Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan.
