But organisations who work with them said they were at least 200,000 in number, crying in silence.

Association of Medical Doctors of Asia, Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, and Cardiff International School Dhaka presented this estimate on Saturday while observing World Down Syndrome Day with rally, workshop, and discussion in Dhanmondi.

The estimation has been made based on the global trend that one in every 800 children born with this chromosomal abnormality.

They, however, lamented that those unfortunate people remained neglected in the society. Even parents do not know how to manage them.

‘The role of family to have equal rights in my opportunity, my likings with complete enjoyment’ was the theme of the observance.
Each of human cells contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. But people with Down syndrome have an extra of the 21st pair that’s why the disease is also called ‘trisomy 21’.
They might have flat face and chin, small eyes and neck, and weak muscles. This chromosomal abnormality also retards their growth and development.
Prof Sordar A Naim, Chairman of Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, said Down syndrome related complications can be controlled by “proper nursing, nutritious food and sincere care”.
