Film fest in martyrs' memory

Movie buffs are in for some exciting times.

A film festival will showcase a bouquet of 24 films at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) at Dhaka University from Saturday.

Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS) will screen only Bengali movies at the carnival styled ‘Amar Bhashar Cholochitro-1420’.

The event is organised every year in honour of the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement and in celebration of the International Mother Language Day.

Movies will be start rolling out in the morning, but DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique will formally inaugurate the festival in the evening.

Several directors of the films to be screened and Chairman of DU’s Department of Television and Film Studies Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan will also attend the inaugural ceremony.

As many as 24 films will be displayed in four sessions – 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm - over six days.

The films to be screened are: Ekdin Protidin (Director: Mrinal Sen), Neel Akasher Niche (Narayan Ghosh Mita), Baishe Srabon (Srijit Mukherji), Biswapremik (Shahidul Islam Khokan), Bari Theke Paliye (Ritwik Ghatak), Udhao (Amit Ashraf), Common Gender (Noman Robin), Monpura (Giasuddin Selim), Nawab Sirajuddoula (Khan Ataur Rahman), Sare Chuattor (Nirmol Dey), Chokher Bali (Rituparno Ghosh), Hothat Bristi (Basu Chatterjee), Agami, Chaka, Dipu Number 2 (Morshedul Islam), Chutir Ghonta (Badal Rahman), Goynar Baksho (Aparna Sen), Chorabali (Redwan Rony), Bangla (Shahidul Islam Khokan), Rongbaz (Zahirul Islam) and Keyamat Theke Keyamat (Sohanur Rahman Sohan).

DUFS has been holding this festival since 2002. It was christened as ‘Amar Bhashar Cholochitro’ in 2007 after several attempts to find a suitable name for it.

This year will be the 13th edition of the festival.
