The signal means a storm with 62 to 88 kilometres per hour (kmph) has formed in the distant deep sea and the ports are not in imminent threat but ships might fall in danger if it leaves the harbour, says the met office.

According to the latest weather bulletin, the depression over east central bay and adjoining area moved slightly west-northwestwards and concentrated into the cyclonic storm.

It said the storm was centered about 595 kms south of Chittagong port, 510 kms south of Cox’s bazar port, 645 kms south-southeast of Mongla port and 575 kms south-southeast of Payra port at 9am on Tuesday.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclone centre is about 62 kmph rising to 88 kmph in gusts.

The met office advises all fishing boats over north Bay to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Assistant Director Sanaul Haque said the cyclone may cross the India coast on Oct 28. "Until now, possibilities of hitting the Bangladesh coast are very low."
