Popular comedian Farid Ali, fondly called 'Challi Foru' by Bangabandhu, dies

One of the favourite actors of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, whom he would fondly call 'Challi Foru', freedom fighter Farid Ali has died.

The 72-year old passed on at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Dhaka at 4pm on Monday, his son Imran Ali Joy told bdnews24.com.

A funeral prayer will be held at Channel I after Zuhr prayers on Tuesday, Imran said.

He will be buried at Banani Graveyard after a Namaz-e-Janaza at his long-time workplace, Bangladesh Film Development Corporation.

Farid had been suffering from problems in his lungs, heart and many other complications.

Imran said his father fell ill when the family was preparing Farid and his wife's 41st marriage anniversary on Aug 19.

He was undergoing treatment at the NICVD with the Bangabandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's help, he said.

Farid won the hearts of scores with his appearance as a comedian in TV dramas in the 1970s and 80s.

Starting his career with 'Kone Dekha' in 1962, he performed in Bangladesh Television's first drama 'Ektola Dotola'.

His first appearance on the big screen was in Amzad Hossain's 'Dharapat' in 1966.

The artiste has also written and directed many dramas.
