The ‘Accreditation Council Act 2016’ was cleared during Monday's regular Cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters that the 13-member council will consist of a chairman, four full-time members and eight part time members.

"“The council’s certification will reflect the university’s standard,” he said.

Bangladesh currently has 38 public and 92 private universities.

In March this year, the Cabinet provisionally endorsed the draft of the law.

Secretary Alam had then said the council will also try to bring public and private institutions on an even level.

“The higher education institutions will be evaluated and certified in the light of the council statutes. All universities will come under its purview.”
