It told the government on Monday to file a detailed report on the curriculum followed by these institutions and their exam modules.
An appeals bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha sought the details within two weeks after hearing a leave-to-appeal petition by the State.
In 2008, the education ministry had issued a circular, making the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree obtained from public colleges a must for high school teachers.
The order said that 1, 658 students had enrolled in the 14 public colleges for the 2007-08 session against 7,215 seats.
The association of private teachers’ training colleges challenged the order in the High Court in July 2008.
In 2013, the High Court ruled in favour of private colleges, but the government appealed against the verdict in the Appellate Division last year.
The appeal was heard on Monday.
“The Appellate Division gave the State two weeks to submit a report on the curriculum of the colleges, exam modules, and the way they are being run and monitored,” Deputy Attorney General Amatul Karim told bdnews24.com.
