BSMMU convocation on Sunday

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is going to hold its convocation on Sunday, the second in its 17 years history.

This lone medical university in Bangladesh offers post-graduate degrees in almost all medical disciplines.
 
At least 517 medical students will receive certificates in the convocation from its Chancellor, President of Bangladesh Md Abdul Hamid.
 
Vice-Chancellor of India’s King George's Medical University Prof Ravi Kant will be the ‘convocation speaker’.
 
The university will confer honorary PhD to seven senior professors this year, said Chairman of the publicity committee of the convocation Prof Kamrul Hassan Khan at a press briefing on Saturday.
 
Former principal of Dhaka Medical College Prof Abul Kashem, founder of the National Institute of Heart Foundation and Hospital National Professor Abul Malik, and Society for Assistance to Hearing Impaired Children (SAHIC) founder Prof M Nurul Amin will receive the honorary doctorate.
 
The founder of the Chittagong Eye Infirmary and Training Complex Prof Rabiul Hussain, senior gynaecologist Prof TA Chowdhury, neurosurgeon Prof Rashiduddin Ahmed, and medicine specialist Prof MN Alam are the other recipients.
 
Three doctors will receive gold medal for their outstanding performance in post-graduate exams.
 
Vice-Chancellor Prof Pran Gopal Datta termed Sunday a “memorable day” for the university and its students.
 
He said he first took the initiative to hold convocation in 2011.
 
“I am happy that I can hold a convocation again,” he said.
 
The erstwhile Awami League government turned the then IPGMR into a medical university in 1998.
