A delegation of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and German Academic Exchange Service – DAAD is visiting Bangladesh from Wednesday in their effort to offer more scholarships to Bangladeshi students.

They will interact with the students and visit different campus during their five-day stay, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka says.

DAAD is offering scholarships for MTech and PhD students while IIT Bombay will provide teaching assistantships to PhD candidates.

Set up in 1958, the IIT Bombay is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research.

The institute has a total of 15 academic departments, 10 centres, one school and four Interdisciplinary programmes with renowned faculties.
Over the last five decades, more than 42,000 engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute.
The IIT Bombay delegation includes Director Prof Devang Khakhar, Deputy Director (Administration & Internal Affairs) Prof Subhasis Chaudhuri and Dean (International Relations) Prof Rajiv Dusane.
The High Commission will organise an interactive session at 4pm Wednesday at its Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in Gulshan for the students.
The students can get answers for their queries from the IIT bosses on academic programmes, infrastructural facilities, accommodation and financial aid available.

DAAD has introduced scholarships for Bangladeshi students for pursuing MTech in engineering systems, biomedical engineering, environmental science and engineering, water resource engineering and technology and development.

It also offers PhD in areas like renewable energy, climate change, health, biodiversity and good governance at IIT Bombay.

There would be 15 such scholarships available for MTech aspirants that will cover cost of education, air fare from home country to India, health insurance, annual study and research subsidy. The scholarship will also include a monthly stipend.

DAAD will be offering five scholarships to students enrolling for PhD programmes that will include admission and tuition fees, air travel, annual study and research subsidy, final thesis subsidy and a monthly allowance.
Moreover, students selected for the PhD programme under DAAD scholarship will be able to pursue six months of their research course in Germany and will get an additional stipend of €1000 towards it.

IIT Bombay, in addition, will provide Teaching Assistantships (TA) to those selected for the PhD programmes besides providing them with campus accommodation and other facilities.

Currently there are two students from Bangladesh pursuing PhD at the Institute.

“Students from Bangladesh will not merely have excellent opportunities to pursue higher education and research in niche areas but also participate in plethora of co-curricular activities and be a part of vibrant campus life of the Institute,” said Prof Khakhar was quoted as saying in a media release.

The team will visit the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology on Sep 18, the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in Dhaka on Sep 20, and Dhaka University on Sep 21.

They will be meeting university functionaries to discuss areas of collaboration as well as interact with the students during their visit.
