A petition by lawyer Younus Ali Akhand filed on Wednesday challenges the government move.

It said, according to the Medical and Dental Council law of 2010, the council, not the government, would administer the tests.

The petition seeks a rule asking under what authority the government conducts the tests.

It also sought an order postponing the admission tests till the matter was resolved.

"The government's health department is holding the admission test when, according to the law, it is the Council that should be conducting it," Akhand told reporters.

Admission tests for 8,493 seats in medical and dental colleges across the country will be held on Oct 24.

In 2012, the government decided to drop tests for admission in medical colleges.

It, however, stepped back after protests by students and the High Court's intervention.
