Donors’ reluctance to keep up promises alarming for LDCs: Bangladesh FM

The foreign minister citing different reports has said that donors’ commitments on a number of LDC issues are yet to be met.

“This is alarming for us,” AH Mahmood Ali said in New York at a G77 annual ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

He asked the G77 to continue “to raise its voice against the inward-looking approaches adopted by our development partners”.

Mahmood Ali spoke as the chairman of the LDCs at the G77 which a grouping of developing countries.

He said G77 becomes a network for “cooperation and solidarity” among the developing countries particularly on the journey of implementing the SDGs, Addis Ababa Action Agenda, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction; and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

“International partnership constitutes the bedrock of these transformative Agendas,” he said, adding that full implementation of the Addis Agenda remains “crucial” in financing for development.

“We have observed our development partners’ rigidity and reluctance to deliver on their commitments on various development issues during the negotiations held in the last UNGA session.

“Crisis Mitigation and Resilience Building mechanism for LDCs are yet to see any considerable progress,” he said.

He stressed on cooperation among the developing countries and with the developed countries in the form of South-South and Triangular Cooperation and North-South Cooperation.
