State-run BASIC Bank’s default loans total Tk 65.4 billion

The Bangladesh Small Industries and Commerce Bank Limited or BASIC Bank and Sonali Bank have more than Tk 97.64 billion in defaulted loans.

Of the figure, BASIC Bank has disbursed the unpaid loans of around Tk 65.4 billion to 628 firms.

The top 20 loan defaulters of Sonali Bank borrowed Tk 32.26 billion.

The parliamentary Committee on Estimates received the information from the two state-owned banks at a meeting on Sunday.

Committee Chairman Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury told bdnews24.com later that Sonali Bank was asked to provide the names of the owners of the 20 organisations. 

According to the minutes of the meeting, the 20 firms include 16 that were used by Hall-Mark Group, which is in the centre of an investigation into a Tk 29.6 billion loan scam.

The committee recommended closing down the Sonali Bank branches that are making loss for five straight years.

It also recommended publishing names of the 20 deputy general managers tasked with recovering the loans, and the organisations that borrowed over Tk 500 million each from BASIC Bank.

According to the BASIC Bank report, it lent more than Tk 1 billion to 11 firms each.
