According to a statement, the consultation on Wednesday was aimed to identify areas of private sector engagement in SDG implementation.

UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Robert Watkins and Member of the General Economics Division (GED) of the Planning Commission Shamsul Alam co-chaired the meeting.

Principal Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad was present as chief guest.

Country Director of International Labour Organization (ILO) Srinivas Reddy presented a keynote about the ways a “triangular national partnership” can be formed among the government, the UN and private sector to meet the SDGs in Bangladesh.

Director of the APEX Footwear Ltd Syed Nasim Manzur spoke on behalf of the business community.

The UN resident coordinator clarified that “while financial resources are important for the SDG achievement, it is even more important to have the knowledge, capacity and partnerships, to develop appropriate policies and strategies that enable the achievement of the Goals”.

“And that this is why today’s meeting is important as the private sector has a major role to play,” he was quoted as saying.
