According to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBC), inflation stood at 5.57 percent in the month, up 0.04 percentage points from the September figure of 5.53 percent.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal came up with the BBS data at a press conference after Thursday’s ECNEC meeting.

Inflation rose in October ‘slightly’ because of the hike in prices of essential commodities like rice, lentils, vegetables and edible oil, the minister said.

According to him, food inflation rose from 5.1 percent to 5.56 percent in October but non-food items registered a fall in inflation from 6.19 percent to 5.58 percent.
The government has set a target of bringing down average inflation to 5.8 percent in the 2016-17 fiscal.
Mustafa Kamal also said that spending from the Annual Development Programme (ADP) was Tk 167.73 billion, which is 14 percent of the total allocation, in the first four months (July-October) of the current fiscal year.
