The minister attributed this rise to the hike in prices of food items owing to Eid-ul-Azha that was celebrated during the course of the month.

Kamal revealed the BBS data on inflation to journalists on Tuesday at a press conference at the NEC conference hall at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.

He said the point-to-point inflation level was at 5.53 percent for last month against 6.37 percent at the same time last year.

He however observed that the hike in food prices after the Eid was less as compared to other years.

He said that food inflation rose from 4.30 percent to 5.10 percent in September.

Non food items registered a fall in inflation from 7 percent to 6.19 percent.

In urban areas, the general inflation for the month of September rose from 7.15 percent to 7.21 percent and food inflation rose from 6.39 percent to 7.03 percent.

However, non-food inflation saw a drop from 7.99 percent to 7.42 percent.

In rural areas, the general inflation last month crept up from 4.41 percent to 4.63 percent. Food items registered a rise in inflation from 3.40 percent to 4.27 percent.

Non food inflation dropped from 6.28 percent to 5.31 percent in rural areas.
