He has asked concerned officials to take initiatives to ensure this is possible.

The call came during the Fifth National Convention of Bangladesh Krishibid Institution and International Conference on Agriculture held in the capital on Thursday.

The president stressed on this 'major challenge' for agriculturists -- to effectively cope with the changing climate alongside ensuring food security for a large population.

He stressed on inventing new breeds of seeds tolerant to the changing adverse climate.

Establishment of agriculture-friendly industry was a must for multidimensional development in agriculture, the president said.

“They (farmers) need to become efficient in using information and technology for coping with climate change. I ask agro-scientists, agriculturists and development workers to take initiatives,” he said.

The president highlighted the importance of multi--dimensional marketing of agro-products.

“Development and innovation are two continuous processes. So you need to keep them going. There is no alternative to diversified marketing,” the president stated.
Hamid highlighted different government initiatives for the betterment of agriculture.
“Bangladesh used to suffer from food shortage. Today not only it is self-reliant but also produces surplus. I am delighted to know that Bangladesh ranks fourth in rice production and third in vegetable production in the world,” he said.
He mentioned that the government aims to reduce poverty and ensure food security and turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021 and a developed country by 2041.

“To achieve this goal, the production process in agriculture needs to be speeded up. For that, education and research in this sector must be expanded,” he said.
