Money related to govt audit objections double the size of 2016-17 budget

The total sum of money caught up in unsettled audit objections in government organisations is more than double the proposed budget’s size.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith disclosed this in reply to an MP’s query in Parliament on Thursday.

He said the amount of money involved in the 876,000 audit objections pending settlement in government organisations was over Tk 7.78 trillion.

Muhith has proposed a Tk 3.41 trillion budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year.

In money terms, the Bank and Financial Institutions Division tops government entities with the highest sum— Tk 1.46 trillion—tied up in audit objections.

Local Government Division faces the highest number of audit objections—82,860.

In reply to another query, the finance minister said the average per capita savings was Tk 25,843 in line with accounts of 2015-16.

He also said a high-powered steering committee had been formed to check whether any foreigner involved in income tax evasion.

According to the minister, the number of registered taxpayers was over 1.9 million, including 315,831 women.
