In the notices issued on Monday, they have been asked to explain in three days why punitive action should not be taken against them.

Of the officials, 11 are deputy general managers, six joint directors and three deputy directors.

Bangladesh Bank spokesperson M Mahfuzur Rahman, however, claimed ignorance of the reasons for serving the notice.

But an official requesting anonymity said it had been prompted by an agitation on Jun 21 against the appointment of a retired general manager in the bank’s Bangladesh Financial Intelligent Unit.

The Bangladesh Bank board of directors had met that day.
The officials demonstrated in front of the Governor Building before the meeting began. They also gave the directors a memorandum when they were on their way to the meeting.
Later, Bangladesh Bank Officers Welfare Council handed over a memorandum to the governor, requesting him to revoke the decision of making the contractual appointment.
Irked by the move, the governor ordered a report on those leading the agitation, said several officials.
Meanwhile, discontent is said to be brewing among the bank’s officials over the show-cause notices.
Bangladesh Bank Welfare Council has convened an urgent meeting for Tuesday to discuss the development.
