He made the comment at a seminar on women entrepreneurs’ development and SME banking in Sylhet on Saturday.

“Bangladesh is not a very wealthy nation, but it is far ahead of India and Pakistan in terms of inclusive growth,” Rahman said referring to an UN report.

The central bank governor observed that only wealth did not ensure development.

“Planning and initiative are also required,” he said. “We have both.”

He also mentioned about government’s policy of giving loans to women entrepreneurs to help them establish their businesses.

“We’ve disbursed Tk 10.42 billion loan to 11,600 women entrepreneurs until April 2015,” he said.

Citing various bank reports, Rahman said women entrepreneurs usually pay back their loans unlike male entrepreneurs who tend to default.

“They utilise the loan and return it in time,” he said.
