They suggested in a pre-budget discussion on Tuesday to spread the tax base to people who are member of big and famous clubs, own personal cars, live in homes with an area above 1,500 square feet and own air conditioners.

The same yardstick was suggested for institutions as well.

The programme at the organisation’s headquarters in Segunbagicha was chaired by NBR Chief Md. Nojibur Rahman and conducted by ERF President Sultan Mahmud.

ERF General Secretary Sazzadur Rahman said, “Our direct tax collection is lower than the neighbouring country. To increase revenue earnings, tax collection has to be increased. At the same time, steps have to be taken to stop money laundering.”

He also urged NBR to help businesspersons facing problems because of the international situation and foreign exchange rates.

Former ERF general secretary, Abu Kawser, urged the imposition of a ‘Super Tax’ on members of clubs of the rich.

The organisation’s Vice President Syed Shahnewaz Karim also suggested exempting from taxes threads and dyes needed for the handloom industry.

Former ERF chief Jakaria Kajal said, “The general people are still afraid of paying taxes. NBR has to take steps to ease that fear.”

He also suggested higher tax on low-cost tobacco products alongside those on high-cost options.
