Govt offices owe BTCL Tk 590m in phone bills

Different ministries, divisions, departments and directorates owe the state-owned land-phone operator Tk 590 million in phone bills.

Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Obaidul Quader divulged the information at Parliament on Sunday.

Answering a question by independent MP Mohammad Selim, he presented Bangladesh Telecommunications Co Ltd’s (BTCL) outstanding bills with 49 ministers and the offices under them until June last year.

Public administration ministry owes the BTCL the highest amount of Tk 109 million. It is followed by the home ministry (Tk 81.3 million), health (Tk 58.6 million) and law (Tk 51.8 million).

To a question by Safura Begum, the minister said the number of BTCL customers was 806,511 at the end of December last year.

The company’s outstanding bills with its customers from 1972 to 2014 stood at Tk 7.03 billion, he added.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presided over the Sunday Parliament session.
