It will be awarded in two categories – science and others.

A student from science group will get a monthly stipend of Tk 175 apart from Tk 50 in tuition fee. A one-off Tk 1,600 will be given for buying books and paying exam fees.

Students from other groups will get a stipend of Tk 125 monthly and Tk 50 tuition fee. They will also get Tk 1,200 for buying books and paying exam fees.

Tuesday’s ECNEC meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, approved the scheme along with five other projects at a cost of Tk 13.47 billion.

At this stage, 40 percent female students and 10 percent male will be brought under the stipend scheme.

The government hopes the scheme will prevent dropouts and encourage science study.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education will implement the government-funded Tk 5.13 billion project.
