NBR Chairman Ghulam Hussain said at the fair’s closing ceremony on Monday that this was a record income tax mop-up in Bangladesh’s history.
“The revenue from the fair has exceeded our expectations," he said. "This proves that the tendency to pay taxes has increased among the public."
The NBR said in a media release that both the number of people registering as new taxpayers and those renewing their E-TIN went up this year.
As many as 15,907 people registered as new taxpayers, 23 percent higher than the previous year, while 10,838 re-registered their E-TIN.
Apart from them, 149,309 income tax returns were filed, 13.1 percent higher than in the last fair.
The fifth fair, held at seven divisional cities and six other districts, served 649,000 people.
