This is part of the government's initiative to send the uprooted population back home.

The Housing Fund and Bangladesh Krishi Bank signed a Tk 20 million loan deal under the 'Going Home Programme' on Sunday.

Bangladesh Bank's Executive Director M Mahfuzur Rahman, also the Housing Fund's member secretary, and Krishi Bank's Managing Director Md Abdus Salam inked the deal.

Central bank Governor Atiur Rahman, present at the ceremony, said the amount of loan would be increased in future.

Mostly poverty and river erosion force people to go to towns and cities to seek a better future. This migration only adds to the ever- increasing city population.

Salam said they would give the floating people loans between Tk 30,000 and Tk 40,000, apart from the housing loans, so that they can make a living.

"The conditions for repaying the loans will be very easy," he said.
