Rangamati, Jan 8 (bdnews24.com) – Voting in Baghaichharhi municipality of Rangamati, the first after its formation in 2004, was going on peacefully on Sunday.
Returning officer Sajedul Islam told bdnews24.com at noon that the voters started casting their votes at nine centres in a festive mood at 8am.
"No disorder took place. A total of 250 policemen are deployed alongside Ansar-VDP. Border guards are also here as striking force," he said.
The government declared Baghaichharhi a municipality in 2004. BNP's upazila unit president Nizam Uddin had acted as the administrator of the municipality until 2007. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) took the charge later.
The municipality has 8,504 voters. Four people are fighting for the mayoral posts and 28 for councillors.
