Asked to bat first, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals as Ambati Rayudu (54) and Hardik Pandya (49) helped them to post 142-6 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Monday.

In reply, Warner struck seven boundaries and four sixes to steer the hosts to the win with 15 balls to spare.

Hyderabad stumbled at the start of their chase when Shikhar Dhawan (2) extended his poor form by walking back in the first over. He was cleaned up after failing to read an inswinging yorker from pacer Tim Southee.

But his partner took charge and kept scoring at a brisk rate to keep his team in the hunt.

Moises Henriques (20) gave good support to his skipper as the duo struck a crucial 62-run partnership for the second wicket.

Henriques' dismissal gave Mumbai some hope of getting back into the game. Hyderabad were then 66/2.

But Warner kept his foot on the gas to score score 90 off 59 balls and took his team over the line in style.

Southee (3-24) was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai.

Earlier, the defending champions lost debutant opener Martin Guptill (2) in the first over.

After striking two boundaries, his partner Parthiv Patel (10) followed him in the fourth over to leave the team struggling at 23-2.

Rayudu and Rohit Sharma (5) helped Mumbai reach 40-2 in the powerplay.

They were reduced to 43-3 when skipper Rohit ran himself out in the eighth over.

But Rayudu steadied the rocking boat along with Jos Buttler (11) but the dismissal of the England batsman piled on more trouble on the visitors.

Allrounder Krunal Pandya (49 not out), who was promoted up the batting order, then played positively, helping his team go past 100 with a couple of boundaries and sixes.

But the 63-run partnership between Rayudu and Pandya came to an end when the former was dismissed in the 18th over that put paid to hopes of a late assault.

Brief scores:

Mumbai Indians: 142/6 in 20 overs (Ambati Rayudu 54, Barinder Sran 3/28)

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 145/3 in 17.3 overs (David Warner 90 not out; Tim Southee 2-24)
