Mirpur Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Suruj Uddin told bdnews24.com that he, and Constables Nurunnabi and Abdul Momen had been escorting the man since Sunday night.

SI Uddin said they were living in the room next to Gautam’s at Mirpur’s Grand Prince Hotel.

He said, though Gautam had not sought any protection, police acted suo moto following reports of an attack on him by Tiger fans.

“People crowd around him for his exceptional getup and behaviour,” the SI said.

Indian media reported that Gautam had been attacked outside the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium after Bangladesh sealed the ODI series against India, winning the second match on Sunday.

bdnews24.com’s photojournalist Asif Mahmud Ove, who was present there, however, said the Indian fan, spotted as usual with his country’s national flag painted on his body and face, had not been physically assaulted.

SI Uddin said some Indian reporters were also staying at that hotel.

“Police will guard him so long we think it is necessary for his safety,” he said.
