Before the match, the Tigers never said anything about how much they wanted to avenge their defeat in this year’s World Cup quarterfinal to India.

But the fans revelling at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium after the victory in Thursday’s one-day international have clearly made up for that – and then some.

Bangladesh, riding on a marvellous five-wicket haul on debut by Mustafizur Rahman, outclassed India by 79 runs in the first ODI in Mirpur.

Earlier, Bangladesh batsmen posted an impressive 307 with some breathtaking strokeplay and gritty accumulation.

Shakib Al Hasan had claimed the last wicket only to trigger wild celebrations in the stadium and throughout the country that were already set in motion by skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza when he took out Mohit Sharma in the 42nd over.

The win has given the Tigers 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Students of Dhaka University broke the silence of the night by taking out victory parades on the campus and gathered at the TSC intersection to revel in the famous win.
Celebratory processions were also taken out by people at other cities and district towns outside Dhaka.
The match has been on the top of the topics on social networking sites throughout the day.
And the win the people have been looking forward to for months only led to an avalanche of posts and status updates on Facebook and other sites.
Many in their comments on
bdnews24.com’s Facebook fan page spoke of taking ‘revenge’ for the defeat in the World Cup quarterfinal against the 2011 champions.
Tanvir Ahmed Siddiqui wrote, “We only need 11 players to win the match. We don’t need umpires,” in a reference to a controversial decision by umpire Aleem Dar during the World Cup match that went in favour of India.
“We’ve taken revenge...congratulations Bengal Tigers,” wrote one Murad Hossain.
A user named Monwar Rashid commented, “I offer deep sympathies to India! Ha ha ha!”
Wanting to take revenge for that defeat in the World Cup knockout game was enough for the Tigers to give their all in the series against India.
But the dream of securing a spot in the 2017 Champions Trophy may have also played a role in Thursday’s emphatic victory. Bangladesh now need to win only one of the next five ODIs to claim a spot.
The top eight-ranked ODI teams until Sept 30 this year will have a go at trophy.
The Tigers have also moved up to the 7th spot in the ICC ODI ranking overtaking West Indies.
Fans, pumped up after the whitewash of Pakistan in April, now hope that the Tigers will serve the same dish to India, which is one of the top sides in international cricket at present.
